When I was a little girl, having butter mints was such a treat. There was just something about the texture and how they just seemed to dissolve on your tongue with their creamy mintyness. You can make homemade butter mints right in your own home. They make a great gift from the kitchen, and are a great recipe for the kiddos to help out with. It’s almost like playing with play dough. The hardest part is waiting for them to dry without eating them all.
These mints are so incredibly simple to make. You just mix all of the ingredients together in your mixing bowl.
Shape them into mints. You can roll them into small balls about the size of a marble, then flatten them with a fork. Alternatively, you can roll the dough into 1/2 inch thick logs and simply cut them with a knife into little “pillows.”
And then you let them dry overnight. That is the hard part.
I adore these little mints, and I can’t wait to give some of them away as Christmas treats.
- 1 lb powdered sugar (10x)
- 1/4 tsp peppermint flavoring (found near the extracts in the baking aisle)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 c melted butter
- 2 Tb hot water
- Food coloring, optional - a few drops as needed for desired color
- Combine all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl. Beat this together until the mixture is smooth.
- You may need to add a little extra powdered sugar to created a soft dough consistency. If so, add it just a teaspoon at a time with the mixer going.
- If you wish to make colored mints, add a couple drops of food coloring to the dough and mix it in. Roll the dough into balls about the size of marbles and place it on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Flatten them with a fork. You can also roll the dough into 1/2 inch logs and cut into pillows if you choose to do it that way.
- Let the mints dry on a cookie sheet or parchment paper overnight. That's it!
- Store the mints in your fridge, in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
