Getting to know those who are growing and making in Alabama.
I have always had a love for people who are “put on the boots and get it done” sorts of people.
Maybe it comes from visiting my grandmother in the country. My grandmother with her frugal ways and farmer neighbors. Going to the apple orchard and picking apples to be preserved. Visiting the county or state fairs every year. Maybe it comes from reading all of the “Little House” books as a kid. Or maybe it is something in my blood. It’s really hard to say. But I have a passion for “salt of the earth” people and hearing their stories.
Last year the Rhodes family from North Carolina, traveled all over the country visiting farms & homesteads and sharing what they do.
That inspired me. Why not begin sharing the stories of those in my own area?
When the idea popped into my head, the first ones that came to mind were DSR Farms. I ruminated on the idea for a while, and put it on the back burner. Then one day out of the blue, someone asked me if I had ever thought of interviewing farmers and homesteaders on Cosmopolitan Cornbread. Are you kidding me? I was blown away.
And it gets better. The first place they mentioned? You guessed it… DSR Farms. I am not much for “signs,” but I am quite skeptical of coincidences.
So I knew what I needed to do. I contacted the Murphy family and made arrangements to visit their farm and share their story. I can’t begin to tell you how much joy it brought me to do that. I enjoyed it so much that I knew I needed to continue this.
And so, I’m calling it the “Home Grown Alabama” tour.
Now that I have the first post published, I will be reaching out to others so that I can hopefully share more stories with all of you.
This “tour” of sorts is not limited simply to farmers though. Here is what I am looking for:
- Farmers (large scale, backyard, hobby, urban, etc.)
- Makers (hand crafts, wood working, skills, etc.)
- Old-fashioned or unique businesses with a story to tell
- Something I hadn’t even thought of
Does this sound like you, or do you have an idea for someone to feature? Tell me more!
