The home we are renting here in Fairbanks has the heat included in the rent. And that, is a VERY good thing.
The house may have 1 foot thick walls to be well-insulated, but the windows and such leave something to be desired.
Because every window in the house looks like…THIS.
Normally in the winter, we keep our thermostat set around 66-68 degrees. In this house, we have to keep it set around 75 degrees, because when all of your windows have blocks of ice on them, the cold simply radiates from them. It makes the house feel very drafty, as though there is a freezer standing open in every room.
One day, I brought a load of damp bath towels to be washed, and set them on the floor of the laundry room. They were in the corner against the wall. A while later I came to put them in the next load, and they were frozen to the wall. I had to pull them off.
Now that is cold!
