You can learn how to make your own Hot Cocoa Mix to control the ingredients and save money!
I have been making my own homemade hot cocoa mix for years. I love that making it myself allows me to control how much sugar goes into it.
I can also make different variations.
To Make This Recipe You Will Need:
- dry powdered milk
- powdered sugar
- baking cocoa
- mixing bowl
- sifter
- airtight container
To begin, you will combine 2 1/2 cups of powdered milk with 2 cups of powdered sugar and 1 cup of baking cocoa.
Optionally, you can add a teaspoon of salt.
You will want to mix the ingredients well, and then use a sifter to get all of the lumps out. You could also use a mesh sieve with a spoon if you do not have a sifter.
Store the mix in an airtight container.
How To Use the Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix
To make your hot cocoa, spoon 2 or 3 heaping tablespoons of the cocoa mix into a mug.
You will need 10 – 12 ounces of nearly boiling water. I bring the water to a boil, turn it off, and wait about 30 seconds to a minute.
Pour about 1/3 of the water into the mug with the mix and use a small whisk (or a fork if you don’t have one) to stir the mix until it is dissolved.
Then add the remaining water.
Enjoy!
Quantities for both the mix and your mug can be adjusted according to taste.
See the recipe card below for a few variation ideas!

Try adding a teaspoon of cinnamon to the mix or 1/3 cup of instant coffee for a mocha version. You could also add cayenne pepper for a Mexican style hot chocolate. If nutritional values are provided for this recipe, they are an estimate and will vary depending on the brands of ingredients you use.
