No need to buy a pre-made jar of apple pie spice, when you can mix it up at home.
One of the things I enjoy doing is finding ways to make up my own spice blends. It really isn’t that difficult to do and it allows you to control the ingredients. When using some blends, such as savory ones, there is often a great deal of salt added. Making your own allows you to regulate or even completely omit that salt.
To make your own apple pie spice blend, here is what you need…
Apple Pie Spice
- 1 Tb + 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 3/4 teaspoon allspice
- 3/4 teaspoon cardamom
- 1/4 teaspoon mace
Combine all of the ingredients in a small dish. Stir to mix well and use as needed. Store this in a small, airtight container. I reuse spice jars for many of my blends and just put my own label on it.
This recipe will make 2 tablespoons of apple pie spice.
What in the World is Mace?
Many people wonder what in the world mace is. No, it’s not the pepper spray you have on your keychain.
Mace is actually another spice made from the same tree as nutmeg. Nutmeg is ground from the nut or seed, mace is ground from the protective layer that surrounds the nutmeg seed/nut itself.
Two spices, same plant. If you have a difficult time locating mace, simply omit it.
